Highway driving can seem intimidating, especially if you haven't driven in a while. High speeds, multiple lanes, and heavy vehicles can cause anxiety. But with the right approach, you can master it.
1. Start During Off-Peak Hours
Don't jump straight into rush hour traffic. Pick early mornings or weekends when the roads are relatively empty. This allows you to get comfortable with the speed and lane changes without the pressure of a crowded highway.
2. Master the Merge
Merging is often the scariest part. Remember to use the acceleration lane to build up speed to match the flow of traffic. Check your mirrors, check your blind spots, use your indicator, and merge smoothly.
3. Maintain Safe Following Distance
Use the "three-second rule." Pick a stationary object on the side of the road. When the car in front of you passes it, count to three. If you pass the object before you reach three, you are following too closely.
